The Pasadena Comic Con is a one day event that took place on Sunday January 27th, 2019 at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California.
I just said the word Pasadena a lot in one sentence.
Now, normally, when I attend a show as press, I write a little note at the top thanking the convention for providing PopLurker with media passes in exchange for coverage. But this show was just a little different.
I…was working the show.
Pasadena Comic Con is run by veteran show runners Steve Wyatt and Scott Zillner, whose name might sound familiar for a host of reasons. In addition to having written a few things for PopLurker, Scott is the owner of our new sister site, Toy Wizards, and other conventions like Power Morphicon, Robo Toy Fest, Japan World Heroes, and Sac Toy Con.
This show marked my debut as Director of Programming (as well as Press and Media Director), which means I designed and scheduled the panels and programming. I was super happy with what came out of it. We had a general comic book panel lead by Barbara Randall Kesel, Geek Media by That Hashtag Show, Internet Writing and Visibility (moderated by me, featuring panelists Maddox, Tom Reimann, Dave C Bell, and Rucka Rucka Ali), a Power Rangers panel, Swipe Right for Superheroes from Ready Set Geek (from the Geek Say What? Network), and Star Wars Law from The Legal Geeks. We wrapped up programming with a Cosplay Contest hosted by Jeromy TV.
As for the rest of the show, the entire exhibitor area was packed. Not only was the main floor home to tons of great guest (Alan Oppenheimer, Melendy Britt, Bruce Boxleitner, and a lovely assortment of Power Rangers, to name a few), but there were incredible local artists (Aidan Casserly, Patrick Owsley, and many of my friends from CAPS), and tons of toy sellers and craft makers as well. And naturally, when your show brings out the cosplayers, you know you’re getting some attention.
The show was also packed with local Press and Media outlets excitedly conducting interviews with the guests and recording the programming. Overall, everyone involved in the show was excited to be there, and the show is clearly growing! With a clear vision and hard work from everyone involved, this amazing one day show will continue its upward trajectory and really mold into something unique and infinitely special.
