Toei Announces End of Heisei Era in Japan Will Mark The End of the Super Sentai Franchise

It’s the end of an era…

With the official end of the Japanese Heisei era on May 1st and the beginning of the Reiwa era, Toei has followed with their own announcement: the end of the Heisei era also marks the stopping point the Super Sentai series.

“With the new era beginning, the current season of Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger the 43rd season of Super Sentai will be the last”, Toei announced in an undisclosed press release. “Toei will be focusing their attention on the Kamen Rider series that has beat expectations on sales over the last couple of years. Super Sentai has not beat or even hit lowered and lower expectations of market shares and toy sales.”

The 42ndseries  Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patranger had the lowest sales figures of all time for Super Sentai. Hasbro had taken over all out side Asia sales for Power Rangers and any Super Sentai projects developed in Japan. These factors also may have had some factors in deciding Toei’s decision.

This does put questions to what future Hasbro’s Power Rangers have going forward without new series from Japan. They do have five seasons still to adapt but after that will they produce new content without Japan’s help?

Perhaps that female Red Ranger premise isn’t too far from becoming a reality…

  1. Please don’t go. At least there are other ideas for other sentai for the next year like a cowboy-themed sentai. We haven’t had any of that at all. Maybe cross that motif with animals like a horse. That would work. We fans would love to see a cowboy-themed super sentai. Please don’t close down the franchise.
